1958

Thurman Averitt starts Livingston Merchants Co-op, the company that would later be known as Averitt Express

1969

Thurman Averitt incorporates his small trucking company as Averitt Express

1971

Averitt, having grown to include two associates, three tractors, and five trailers, is sold to 20-year-old Gary Sasser on October 1

 

Averitt opens Nashville, TN service center on October 1

1972

Averitt begins construction of new facility in Livingston, TN

1975

Averitt implements associate profit sharing plan

1976

Averitt opens Knoxville, TN service center on May 16

1978

Tennessee Public Service Commission grants Averitt authority to serve customers in Cookeville, TN

 

Averitt opens Cookeville, TN service center on June 23

 

Averitt's annual revenue tops $1 million mark for the first time

1979

Red Ball Motor Freight sells its Tennessee intrastate authority, including major metropolitan centers, to Averitt

 

Averitt opens Chattanooga, TN service center on February 19

 

Averitt establishes a corporate maintenance facility in Cookeville, TN

1980

Averitt opens Memphis, TN service center on January 2

 

Motor Carrier Act "deregulates" the trucking industry. Averitt Express is well poised for expansion with facilities already established at every major crossroads of the state. Over the following years, while many transportation companies fold due to deregulation, Averitt Express grows at a rapid pace.

1981

Averitt moves corporate offices to Dacco Road in Cookeville, TN

 

Averitt begins offering full truckload services

 

Averitt establishes a national accounts unit in September

1982

Averitt opens Atlanta, GA service center, its first outside Tennessee, on October 4

1985

Averitt receives full-state authority in the state of Tennessee and becomes known as "Tennessee's Carrier"

 

Averitt associate present the “AE1” trailer to Gary Sasser as a thank you

 

Averitt switches from an IBM computer system to the “Prime” computer system. For the first time, all service centers are "online" with each other.

1986

Averitt rolls out its “Winner’s Circle” corporate symbol

 

Averitt Express Associates Charities (AEAC), now known as "Averitt Cares for Kids," is created. One of the first associate-funded charitable giving programs of its kind, AEAC is featured in The Wall Street Journal.

1987

Averitt moves its corporate offices to Perimeter Place complex in Cookeville on July 13

 

Averitt implements electronic data interchange (EDI) technology

1989

Averitt launches the “On Time. On Target. Intact” tagline

 

Averitt’s annual revenue surpasses $100 million mark for the first time

1990

Averitt tests shipment barcoding for the first time

 

Averitt begins using roll-up trailer doors

 

The Harvard University School of Business begins using the management style of Averitt Express as a case study model

1991

Averitt begins providing service to Canada

 

Averitt forms its Averitt Dedicated Services (ADS) unit. Now known as Averitt Truckload, ADS begins providing truckload service linking the Southeast to the manufacturing heartland of the North.

 

Averitt implements its associate suggestion program

 

Averitt moves its corporate maintenance unit to Nashville

 

Averitt opens a new, state-of-the-art service center in Nashville, TN on October 14

1993

Averitt opens first offshore service center in Puerto Rico

1995

Averitt establishes a national customer service call center in Cookeville

1996

Averitt launches logistics unit by providing managed facilities, transportation management and transportation network design services

1997

Averitt establishes dedicated unit by providing dedicated contract carriage services

1998

Averitt begins providing expedited transportation services

 

Averitt expands its international services to include Mexico and the U.S. Virgin Islands

 

Averitt’s annual revenues top the $500 million mark for the first time

1999

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital names Averitt "Employee-Giving Organization of the Year"

2000

Averitt expands its expedited services to include airfreight

 

Averitt expands its international services to include ocean and international airfreight service to 100 countries

2001

In the wake of 9/11, Averitt Cares for Kids presents a check for $100,000 to the American Red Cross National Disaster Relief Fund

2002

Averitt announces 100% coverage of the state of Texas

2003

Averitt integrates its dedicated and logistics service units and renames the newly integrated unit "Averitt Express Supply Chain Solutions"

 

Averitt opens first PortSide® distribution facility in Long Beach, CA

2004

Averitt begins offering direct service to Southern California, Milwaukee and Cleveland markets

2005

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Averitt Cares for Kids presents a check for $100,000 to the American Red Cross National Disaster Relief Fund

 

Averitt unveils its “Think Red Instead” campaign, complete with a new corporate logo and red uniforms

2006

Averitt opens new distribution facilities in Texas and California

2007

Averitt expands its national call center at its corporate headquarters in Cookeville, TN

2008

Averitt joins other regional LTL carriers to form The Reliance Network

 

Averitt launches Asia-Memphis Express, its ocean LCL service from Asia

2009

Averitt Cares for Kids makes its largest contribution ever with a $500,000 donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

 

Walmart Selects Averitt for Rising Star Carrier of the Year
